Who are the hard to replace employees?

If you ever managed a team, you know who your best employee is. It is the one who is Experienced & Dedicated. In other words, he/she “gets things done.” The reality is that replacing this employee is hard to do. Companies want to make as much money as possible and also to have a competitive edge but without this type of employees it’s simply delusional. So, to what extent do you try to protect from losing the experienced & dedicated individual during layoffs? (P.S. Happy Father’s Day)
