Difference between Realistic & Symbolic threats?

In business or other platforms, consideration of threats is part of sound risk analysis. But, understanding the difference between realistic and symbolic threats is not only required but essential to making sound decisions. For example, focusing on symbolic threats leads to time and effort on “perceived” differences which can be a waste of time and energy like chasing ghosts (“paralysis by analysis”). So, when was the last time you evaluated risks and do you see any evidence of symbolic threats?
