Again, how not to win an argument?

Getting into an argument whether at work or in family situations is not a memorable experience but sometimes is just not possible to avoid them. Some people just feel like they need to be right regardless of what you say so getting defensive or making them look ignorant in front of others will only ensure their outrage increase. So, how can we avoid mine fields that will only ensure we lose an argument?
